Cancer Presentation to FFI Students

We find it extremely important to prepare our Firefighter I students as best as possible for success in their fire service careers. To do this we continue to incorporate presentations from outside organizations to help us with highlighting important topics plaguing the fire service.

This evening, Firefighter Paul Spennato from the Westport Fire Department presented his program “Still Responding: Firefighter Cancer Awareness” to our Firefighter I students at the Essex Fire Department. Students from both our Essex and Cromwell programs were in attendance. His presentation explains the story of a firefighter who was diagnosed with cancer during his career and how he navigated this illness to get better. He discusses the process and the best ways to reduce our risks in the fire service. FF Spennato is a mentor for the Firefighter Cancer Support Network and is an advocate for all firefighters experiencing a cancer diagnosis and the cultural change in the fire service.

With the ever growing cancer rates plaguing the fire service this message is important to firefighters just starting out in the fire service. We are extremely thankful for Paul spending his evening with our students.
